INTERVIEW WITH HOUSE LEGEND ATFC

18 years in the industry, 3 UK top forty tracks and remixes of Missy Elliot, P Diddy and Fatboy Slim, you are truly one of the most talented and most respected DJs in the world! How do you feel about the success you have had so far?
Well of course I’m very proud and really happy to still be here doing my thing and to have taken all the ups and downs that the music industry has thrown at us. I’ve worked very hard for what I’ve achieved but the fact of the matter is that I’d be doing this even if it didn’t pay. I always dreamed of travelling the world djing and producing my own music and it seems that every year I’m able to tick off another ambition met.

Beatport awarded you with the ‘Best House Artist of 2009’ last year. What DJ’s/producers have inspired yourself to be who you are today?
MAW, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Trevor Nelson, Tim Westwood, CJ Mackintosh, Mousse T, Jazz’N’Groove, Grant Nelson, and more currently guys like Axwell and Mark Knight.

ATFC is the acronym we all know as Aydin The Funki Chile! How did that name come about?
About 15 years ago I was writing a Jazz, Funk & Hip Hop column in a music magazine and one issue the editor signed me off as Aydin The Funki Chile (as in Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix – pronounced chyle). I started using it as my dj name – when people couldn’t get it right I shortened it to ATFC, now I get asked what it stands for all the time. I’m back at the beginning of the circle!

You’ve played across the globe including Dubai, Italy, Amsterdam and Miami. Which has been the best place to DJ in your opinion?
Japan – the crowds there have so much energy and enthusiasm. Plus the equipment and sound system are always state of the art.

You’ve spent the last 10 years playing in practically every venue in the London capital, and now you will launch Ventrina at KOKO. Is there any place you would love to DJ that you haven’t already?
Hmm in the world? Space Ibiza, Cocoon Frankfurt, Warung Beach Brazil and Pacha NY spring to mind.

It’s been said that London is the world stage for clubbing and dance music. Do you think this statement is true? Why?
I guess so yes. As I said on the sleeve notes to my Defected mix album.. Other cities may have their flings with House Music. Sure, some may even have invented it, but London has always stayed faithful, been there through the good and bad times and still represents the full 360 degrees of four to the floor vision.

‘Tell U Y’ ft Yasseem Sulieman is at excellent house tune. Is there anybody else you would love to collaborate with on a track?
I’d like to get UK soul singer Omar on a record, Sounds Of Blackness would be great, and other usual suspects such as Jocelyn Brown, Roy Ayers. A rapper like Rakim, Q Tip or Big Daddy Kane would be a dream come true too.

The saxophone infused new release ‘I Called You (The Conversation)’ is definitely one for the books. What do you want to accomplish this year?
Really to just keep on top of things the way they are – everyone has highs and lows so the energy is focussed on maintaining the high for as long as possible. I’m also going to be working on some slightly different projects outside dance music – music for tv etc. My year is already mapped out with releases for Defected, the Ibiza season and Miami and ADE conferences so it’s going to be busy I know that!

ATFC In The House, London ’10, Defected, is a huge album for your fans and all of the clubbing scene. What do you like most about this album you’ve made?
I think it’s got a good balance of old, new, soulful and tougher records on there. There are a couple of edits where I’ve combined acapellas with instrumentals and they’ve taken a new direction. Defected put a lot of work into the added extras including a video presented by Shovell and a booklet highlighting some hidden secrets about eating, shopping and clubbing in London. Overall it’s really good value for money I think.

Who are your favourite acts at the moment today?
Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada and the Original House Band we showcase at Defected events are fantastic – members include Barbara Tucker, Steve Edwards, Mark Evans, Yasmeen and Robin Lee (Faze Action).

What can your fans expect at Ventrina?
The 3 amigos (or more than likely The Marx Brothers) behind the decks. I know Adam Funkagenda & Dave Spoon pretty well so it’ll be a laugh I’m sure – we’ll all bring our own flavour of House to the party so expect a wild night!
